Upstream Color is quite ambiguous and leaves a lot to the viewers interpretation. The minimalist dialogue, the atmospheric score along with the outstanding performances enhance the psychological impact of the experience.
Carruth’s last movie features elements of The Tree of Life carefully mixed with surreal storytelling similar to Lost Highway. Lynch’s influence can be seen in the enigmatic characters and bizarre plot. Malick’s influence is felt in the time-laps shot of the decaying pig, in the Walden reference, in the hushed dialogues and abstract timeless scenes.
A truly delightful cinematic experience that leaves you flabbergasted.
