A Belgian-French psychological horror film by first-time female director Julia Ducournau. Set in a veterinary school campus, the movie follows Justine, an innocent vegetarian girl, as she tries to survive the harsh initiation rites imposed on freshmen by seniors.
Although beautifully acted and well directed, the film promises so much and indulges in heavy metaphoricism only to collapse under its own weight in a hasty (almost ridiculous) epilog.
Shot composition, score, pacing and editing definitely show a director with talent.
I for one will be watching for her upcoming works.
